The name “Brunello”, that identifies the unique wine from Montalcino & surroundings, dates back to 1870, and can be found in documents leading to that date. Brunello wines have always been well-known, because of their quality and their production, done using only sangiovese grapes, and at the same time they have always been very appreciated for its strong taste and its refined and elegant flavoures, that allows to match it with many different kind of meals, such as red meat or game bird, coming with mushrooms or truffles if necessary.
After that, Montalcino wine is a privileged symbol of the italian style, being used in the most important occasions abroad too. It is not so easy to say how much a Brunello must mature to be drunk at its best: in fact, it depends on the year of production. It goes from a minimum of ten years to a maximum of thirty years. However, because of its features, the Brunello of Montalcino wine improves with the passage of time.
Brunello wine production goes through a period consisting in the aging of the wine: after a period of maceration and fermentation it is preserved in oak or in small French barriques, that add to the Brunello a certain fruitiness and a more pronounced vanilla flavour.
Brunello wine companies use to divide their productions into two branches: the one called “normal” and the “riserva” (reserve) one. The main difference between them is that the first one has to be released in the market after 50 months from its harvesting, the other one 12 months later. The Brunello di Montalcino has to stay 2 years in wooden.
